Drivers from 27 states, including Pennsylvania, are heading to Washington DC in hopes of gaining some attention.

Before they got in gear they rallied at a truck stop in Dauphin County. CBS 21's Ewa Roman shows us how they prepared to protest.
Story by Ewa Roman

At Gable's Truck stop in West Hanover Township, they're no longer selling diesel fuel, they can't afford it. Across the street it's $4.27/gallon. That price is what has those truck drivers here fired up and ready to roll out to Washington DC

A convoy of truckers rolls into town, preparing to rally at gable's truck stop Monday morning before taking the convoy to the nation's capitol.

Truck driver John Lamanteer and his wife Connie, will go along for the ride. Frustrated and angry about the high diesel prices, they want congress to know the impact rising costs can have on everyone.

John:
“Your food, toys, computers, they're all hauled by truck drivers. The backbone of our trucks is diesel fuel to power them. And this rise in cost is hurting trucks, in turn hurting supplies to your stores.”

John and Connie's cost to fuel their rig has gone up from $1,800 a week to $3,500 a week.

Connie:
“And we're taking the cost. We're supplying America and something has to give. Something has to stop.”

Drivers say the fuel prices will stop more truckers in their tracks, putting them out of business.

William Herr:
“Mr. and Mrs. America are sitting on the edge of insolvency and the government doesn't want to say anything about it because there is an election. Truck drivers don't get elected . We just go out and do it.”

Organizers are asking the public to get involved in the protest as well. They are encouraging people to call the White House switchboard to complain about the price of fuel. That number is 202-224-3121.

Prices shown here were on April 27th at 8:00PM
in West Hanover Township

SPECIAL REPORT: Rep. Petri introduces TRUCC Act in the House Thursday, May 1, 2008 – When a carrier or broker collects a fuel surcharge the surcharge should be passed on to the trucker or company that actually buys the fuel – and a new bill in the House of Representatives seeks to make sure that happens.

“It’s only fair,” Rep. Thomas Petri, R-WI, said Wednesday, April 30, as he introduced HR5934 the “Trust in Reliable Understanding of Consumer Costs Act,” also called the “TRUCC Act,” in the House.

The House version of the TRUCC Act mirrors a one introduced in the Senate by Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-ME, and Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-OH, this past week. The Senate version, S2910, is also called the TRUCC Act. It has been read twice in the Senate and assigned to the Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation.

In introducing the TRUCC Act in the House, Petri stressed the hardships created when fuel surcharges are collected but not passed through.

“I am introducing this bill in response to independent truckers and small trucking companies in my district and the state of Wisconsin, who have told me that there are occasions where they must pay for the cost of fuel but the broker or carrier that they are working with is not passing on to them fuel charges that are being billed to the shipper,” Petri said in a press release announcing the introduction of the bill in the House.

“In normal circumstances, this seems patently unfair, but in this day of $4-plus per gallon diesel fuel, it is unconscionable that a fuel surcharge is being assessed but not passed on to the one actually paying the fuel bill.”

Petri went on to relate a story about one of his constituents who is a truck driver and will soon be officially filing for bankruptcy. The trucker said not receiving fuel surcharges that were collected but not passed through certainly contributed to his financial demise.

“It’s not right, and it should be corrected,” Petri said. “The TRUCC Act is the least we can do to send the message and be clear that they should not be deprived of the payments they deserve.”

HR5934 has been referred to the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.

Truckers who want to express their support for the House version of the TRUCC Act, bill HR5934, or the Senate version, bill number S2910, should contact their representative and two senators in Washington, DC. Those who don’t know who their representatives or senators are can call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and provide their ZIP code to the operator to be connected to the appropriate offices.

House votes to stop adding to oil stockpile
Tue May 13, 2008 7:27pm EDT
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The House of Representatives on Tuesday followed the Senate in rejecting the Bush administration's policy of adding oil to the country's Strategic Petroleum Reserve while fuel prices are high. The House passed legislation that would suspend crude deliveries to the U.S. emergency oil stockpile while the price of oil was above $75 a barrel, a move the White House has opposed. Oil traded at a record near $126 a barrel on Tuesday. The Senate approved a similar measure earlier in the day.Like the Senate's legislation, the 385-to-25 vote in favor of the bill in the House was big enough to override a possible presidential veto of the measure.
